About the HMIS

The Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS) is a computerized information management system containing data related to the Federal program to ensure the safe transportation of hazardous materials by air, highway, rail, and water. The HMIS is the primary source of national data for the Federal, state, and local governmental agencies responsible for the safety of hazardous materials transportation. Data from the system is also used by the industry, news media, and the general public. Its six subsystems concern:

  1. Incidents involving, generally, the interstate transportation of hazardous materials by the various transportation modes.
  2. Special Permits issued to hazardous materials regulations.
  3. Interpretations of the regulations issued by the PHMSA, as requested by concerned parties.
  4. Approvals of specialized container manufacturers, reconditioners, and testers.
  5. Compliance activities, including inspections performed by HMS and completed enforcement proceedings.
  6. Registrations filed by certain carriers, shippers, and other offerors of hazardous materials.

Information on shipping routes of certain highway shipments of high level radioactive materials may be obtained from the Federal Highway Administration, Office of Highway Safety, (202) 366-2186.
